Memory and Dementia Assessment
There are multiple reasons for cognitive decline and dementia which includes Alzheimer’s dementia, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, alcohol-related dementia etc. Sometimes, patients have conditions like depression, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypothyroidism which presents like dementia but have a better outcome. Each form of dementia has different management approach and prognosis. In our assessments, we identify the type of dementia by clinical history from the patient and family, blood investigations and imaging of the brain. We spend nearly one hour with the patient and the family and address their concerns regarding the issues. During this period, we also provide education regarding dementia and link them with the various services related to dementia.
We also address the complications related to dementia including behavioural and psychological issues. Significant carer stress can be involved with dementia and behaviour issues; which can be addressed through proper education regarding the disease process, symptom management and social support services. Our primary motive is to provide holistic care that involves not only patient management but also the understanding of patient’s and carer’s needs.
